PASADENA, Texas — Former Major League Baseball All-Star Woody Williams has returned to San Jacinto College as assistant coach and pitching coordinator for the Ravens baseball team.
Williams, a 15-year MLB veteran and seasoned collegiate coach, rejoins the Ravens after three years serving as a pitching coach at the University of Texas and the University of Houston.
"It's wonderful to be back, and I look forward to mentoring the young men in our baseball program," Williams said. "The way I have been welcomed back makes me feel that I never left."
During his previous time at San Jac, Williams helped guide the team to five NJCAA World Series appearances and played a key role in developing players like Jackson Rutledge, a 2019 MLB first-round draft pick.
"We're excited to welcome Woody back to the coaching staff," said Eric Weaver, Ravens head coach. "During his seven years at San Jac, he made a tremendous impact and continued that success over the past three years in the Big 12. Woody brings a wealth of coaching knowledge that will be a major asset to our team."
Williams spent 1993-2007 in the majors, compiling a 132-116 record with a 4.19 ERA across more than 2,000 innings. He earned All-Star honors in 2003 with the St. Louis Cardinals, finishing that season 18-9 with a 3.87 ERA.
A former two-way player at the University of Houston (1987-88), he pitched 100.1 innings with a 3.32 ERA in his final college season.
"Changing lives has always been my main focus during my coaching career," Williams said. "Teaching baseball is the easy part but making sure that I'm in tune with every player that I get to coach is what it's all about for me. I want each student athlete to understand that I care for them and I'm someone they can count on daily."
With Williams back on staff, San Jacinto College looks to build on its tradition of excellence and continue producing top-tier collegiate and professional talent.
