Leadership and Growth: Building the Foundation for a Winning Season

As the San Jacinto College baseball team enters the second half of its season, players like Colton Wemhoff (Gladstone HS/ Gladstone,Missouri) and McCabe Moyer (IMG Academy/Washougal, Washington) have reflected on their leadership growth and the importance of team chemistry. Newcomers and returners are focused on building a foundation to propel the team through its most formidable challenges.

For Wemhoff, who transferred to San Jac from the University of Kansas this semester, the transition has been about more than just adjusting to a new team. He emphasizes the importance of being a leader to a group that values self-accountability both on and off the field.

"I try to bring a lot of energy and leadership around the field," Wimhoff said. "It can be hard coming into a new team and being the leader, but I've found that I can just do my job and lead by example."

While San Jac's talent is undeniable, the leadership shown by players like Wimhoff has been crucial in keeping the team focused and motivated.

McCabe Moyer, a sophomore who has spent two years with the program, agrees that leadership is one of the cornerstones of success.

Reflecting on the returners' influence, Moyer explained how they have played a vital role in helping new players navigate the college baseball lifestyle.

"We've done a great job trying to get the new guys through the learning curve of college baseball," he said.

The goal remains clear as the team tackles the second half of the season: continue building on their leadership and maintaining a united front.

"Something very different about junior college baseball is that we play everybody twice, like in two rotations," Moyer said. "We can have a plan going into the second half of the season, and we can approach things a little differently, understanding how the other teams play and how we can adjust to and take advantage of their discrepancies to help us win."
